Student Council


The Student Council is the core decision-making body of the Student Union. It consists of student representatives democratically and inclusively selected from each class and from the Student Parliament.

Student Union Advisory Board


The Advisory Board is a voluntary team of dedicated students formed to support the operations of the Student Union. Its role is to strengthen the connection between the university administration and the student community, while providing innovative initiatives and solutions.

Since its recent formation, the Advisory Board has achieved significant milestones by enhancing the operation, exposure, and accessibility of the Student Union. Under the leadership and guidance of Student Union President, Esey Petros, the board has successfully initiated and implemented a variety of impactful projects, including:

Green, Clean, and Sustainable University Environment Initiative

  • Leadership Workshops and Trainings
  • Launching the University’s Largest and Most Diversified sudenta Social Media Platform
  • Launching the first ever digital student news letter that is uploaded everymonth to share news for students and to conduct advertisement works.
  • All-Campus Club Fair Festivals
  • Intercampus Sports Festival
  • Fresh Students Welcoming Event
  • Launch of the first Modern multipurpose Chatbot for Student Engagement

Formation and Structuring of the Hawassa University Peace Club, focused on peacebuilding and conflict resolution.

  • facilitated an impactful peaceful university community project named" sustained dialogue "in collaboration with Ethiopia institute of peace and life and peace institute.
  • life experience sharing event inviting Kenean dukamo,entrepreneur and ceo of daye bensa coffee export and Dagmawi Asefa,writer,lawyer and public speaker

Through these projects, the Advisory Board has effectively brought students and the university community closer together while working on shared agendas.

Clubs and associations

Hawassa University is recognized as a hub for extracurricular activities, hosting a wide range of clubs and associations that have made significant impact both within the campus community and at the national level. These groups foster student engagement, leadership, creativity, and social responsibility.

Reasonable Visionaries Club (RVC) 

A platform where students gather to freely discuss youth agendas, read and review national and international books, engage in dialogue, and express their talents through art, music, drama, and other creative forms.

Mekrez Club

A techno-campus-based club actively engaged in artistic works, including drama, poetry, and other creative performances.

UNA-ET HU  

Part of the United Nations Associations of Ethiopia, this club advocates for the implementation of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through trainings, workshops (including Model United Nations), projects, and student-led activities.

Serve for Society Club

New Generation Club   

Focused on youth-centered agendas, particularly raising awareness on issues such as addiction, gender-based violence (GBV), HIV/AIDS, and related social challenges.

TESFA Counseling Club

Provides psychological support and counseling to students dealing with depression, addiction, and related challenges. The club also educates students on mental health through various platforms.

Geological Society of Hawassa University

A specialized society that promotes knowledge and awareness of geology in Ethiopia through educational and engagement activities.

HUGADSA (Hawassa University Governance and Development Studies Association) An association aimed at empowering students through capacity building in leadership, governance, and community engagement.

Primarily dedicated to charitable works, especially focused on supporting children in need.

A techno-campus-based club that engages in charity and fundraising initiatives for children.

HULSA (Hawassa University Law Students Association) Empowers law students through moot court competitions, legal training sessions, and other professional development activities.

JSCA (Journalism Students’ Club Association) Focuses on equipping journalism students with practical media and news-making skills, providing them with hands-on experience through participation in club activities.

Affiliated with the international True Culture University, this club promotes Pan-Africanism and black culture through awareness, dialogue, and cultural activities.

Engages in environmental conservation activities on campus, such as tree planting, watering, and campus cleaning initiatives.

Focuses on raising awareness of human rights issues and creating platforms for dialogue and advocacy around human rights agendas.

Works to create a digitally aware community by addressing issues such as responsible media use, hate speech prevention, and digital literacy.

 A leadership and personal development club focusing on building skills in leadership, time management, teamwork, and voluntarism.

Methods of HUSU

The Student Union applies diverse approaches to serve and empower students:

A structured Student Council with elected representatives from all campuses ensures inclusivity and fair decision-making.

A Youth Advisory Board strengthens the link between students and university management while designing innovative projects.

Works with national and international organizations (e.g., UN, GIZ, SRYC, EHEISU, LPI) to expand opportunities and visibility.

Over 20 vibrant clubs are the backbone of student participation, innovation, and volunteerism.  

 Initiatives like newsletters, chatbot systems, career fairs, and awareness programs directly serve student needs.

Organizes welcoming programs, inter-campus festivals, leadership workshops, and dialogue forums to engage the student body.

Uses social media platforms, digital newsletters, and media clubs to keep students informed and connected.

Sustained dialogue and peace clubs promote harmony and conflict resolution within the university community.
