The Library Service Directorate (LSD) has the following main duties and responsibilities:

  • Ensures timely acquisition, collection, and organization of relevant materials (books, magazines, journals, multimedia, digital resources).
  • The University Librarian is responsible for planning, budgeting and development of the Library and for promulgation of all rules governing the use of the library resources by students, staff members and external users.
  • Implements and maintains a hybrid physical-digital collection strategy (i.e. both print and electronic versions) to attract more readers.
  • Modernizes the working systems by improving library automation, information systems, and technical infrastructure (e.g., Koha ILS, digital repositories, Online Public Access Catalog-OPAC).
  • Oversees and coordinates all the branch libraries to ensure consistent standards and procedures.
  • Develops systems to make all materials available on reasonable terms to all students and faculty, balancing local and university-wide needs.
  • Provides reliable 24/7 access to library facilities and services across campuses.
  • Ensures robust access to digital resources (e-books, e-journals (i.e. both subscribed and HU journals), databases) and institutional repositories (theses, dissertations, scholarly output).
  • Delivers core services including circulation, documentation, archival (e.g., Ethiopian Archive), and user support.
  • Directly supports the university's tripartite mission of teaching, research, and community engagement.
  • Empowers users through information literacy courses, workshops on research methods, and ongoing training
  • Actively engages with the academic community to enhance research skills and support teaching, research, and community engagement
  • Solicits and manages donations through fostering external linkage and partnerships with other libraries and consortia (e.g., CEARL) for resource sharing and collaboration.
  • Performs any other relevant duties as assigned by the Academic Vice President.
