Success Story

Significant Milestones in 2025

As a first generation university in Ethiopia with deep roots in agriculture, forestry, natural resources, medicine and health sciences, and teacher education, Hawassa University has developed flagship programs, research outputs, innovation hubs and employability initiatives that drive national and regional development by engaging development financiers, industry partners and international collaborators for strategic alliances and investment. We have forged strategic collaborations with international institutions that strengthened our aspirations of establishing research laboratories, training centers, and academic and research staff capacity building projects alongside working on community services in education, health, agriculture, environmental protection, job creation for youth and women, animal health, food security and sustainable development at large.

As a result, we have advanced laboratories at the colleges of: Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources, Medicine and Health Sciences, Natural and Computational Sciences and Institute of Technology. We also established Center for Cancer Treatment in Hawassa which is providing critical health services including oncological diagnosis and treatment several patients in addition to the services provided for millions of patients at the Comprehensive Specialized Referral Hospital under the college of Medicine and Health Sciences.

This past year, Hawassa University hosted landmark events such as the 22nd International Conference on Ethiopian Studies (ICES22) in 2025, advanced problem-solving research informing national policy, scaled agricultural innovations like soybean production for food security, established specialized centers including the Forestry Knowledge Management Center (FKMC) at Wondo Genet College of Forestry and Natural Resources and STEM initiatives, and forged international partnerships enhancing technology transfer and community engagement. The Institute of Technology also received laboratory equipment worth millions from GIZ to establish eight advanced engineering technology labs. These accomplishments exemplify innovation in education as a vital instrument for youth empowerment, resilient livelihoods, environmental stewardship, and shaping Ethiopia's progressive narrative through knowledge creation and societal impact.

Hawassa University is now at a critical junction of transitioning to Autonomous Research University after fifty years of its foundation as a public higher education institution and serving as a comprehensive university for the past 25 years in Ethiopia. We are very excited to celebrate Hawassa University’s Golden Jubilee this year with countless milestones registered since our onset and driven to do more.
