Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Centre
The STEM Centre is a key unit under the Office of the Vice President for Research and Collaboration at Hawassa University. We are dedicated to inspiring the next generation of innovators by providing high-quality, hands-on STEM education and outreach programs for secondary school students and the wider community.
Our mission is to bridge academic STEM concepts with real-world application, foster scientific curiosity, and support talent development from the classroom to the community.
Our Core Programs and Activities
Flagship Training Program
- Science Shared Campus Program: Delivers practical, laboratory-based training in STEM for students in grades 9-12, directly aligned with the national school syllabus and textbooks.
Specialized Training and Capacity Building
- Robotics Program: Offers weekend, semester-break, and summer courses for grades 7-12, teaching basic computer skills, electronics, and software programming.
- Lab Sessions: Provides supplementary, syllabus-based laboratory practical sessions for high school students during weekends and breaks.
- Girls in STEM Online: Conducts a dedicated online STEM education program for girls, in partnership with the New York Academy of Sciences.
Community Outreach and Engagement
- STEM Outreach Program: Organizes annual semester-break and summer programs for talented students (grades 7-12) from catchment-area schools through science fairs, after-school activities, and workshops.
- Science Fairs: Host competitive exhibitions where school students present science projects, sharing ideas with peers, families, and visitors.
- STEM Centre Visit Program: Facilitates visits for school students and the community to the Centre’s facilities and organizes field trips to local industries to demonstrate real-world STEM applications.
